August, People. AUGUST.

Book lovers! It is almost August. Which, for our purposes, means it is time to discuss Hillary Jordan's MUDBOUND.

This is where there should be a photo of me with a huge grin.

This is where I confess that I have never actually participated in a structured, online "book club" discussion.

This is where I note that we have people in different time zones.

I think, with blogger's embedded"reply" feature, it will still work even if everyone cannot show up at the same time. Although I would be thrilled if as many people as possible could actually be here.

Maybe we can work it out in the comments to this post. The when, the how, whether people need more time to read. But especially the part about the snacks.

UPDATE: We will be discussing the book throughout the day on Thursday, August 9th.

  1. I can be pretty flexible on this except for the period from August 14th to the 21st.

I know weekends can be tough, but we've got Davin on the west coast and Steve 6 hours ahead of EST and people's jobs to work around. Again, we can pop in and out, but it would be fun to have a conversation if we can.

    Open to suggestions!

  2. I'm so close to the end I actually considered hiding out in a restaurant this morning instead of coming into work so that I could finish it. Alas, I was a good boy and will probably finish it tonight or tomorrow morning.

I suggest you pick a day, and maybe people can check in throughout that day, maybe during some 5-hour window that's comfortable for all time zones? Is that too loosey-goosey?

    1. I think that makes sense. Let's see if anyone needs to finish--I know Cat, Sarah, and Wendy have finished, even though we have not said a word about it, rumors on twitter notwithstanding.

Is a week day tough for you with work? Would you want part of the window to come at night west coast time?

    2. I haven't finished yet, but I can by the end of this week.

After August 15, I'm toast for the rest of the month, but that shouldn't sway the scheduling. Whatever is most convenient for the rest of the group is good. I'll just pop in when I can.

  3. I'm good with whatever. My schedule is pretty flexible and I'm somewhere in the middle of the time zones so it will be easiest for me anyway, probably.

Also, a thought to consider... there are advantages to not coming in all at once. Because I'm notoriously slow at formulating and writing comments down on a blog and so by the time I say what I'm trying to say probably the conversation will have moved on anyway.

As far as structure, we should take advantage of the embedding for sure. So if we are discussing on particular angle you should REPLY if you want to make points on that, but if you want to do a thread about something else, start a new comment.

    1. Maybe, then, we just pick a day without setting a window. That way if anyone, say, in Europe wants to chime in, he can, and Davin can, too.

If that sounds good, I am more partial to a weekday since our weekends can get a little nuts with three kids.

How about next Thursday the 9th?
